Wenn man in den grossen Skigebieten der Alpen unterwegs ist, bekommt man oft das Gefühl, in einem Art „Wintersport-Vergnügungspark“ zu sein. Hunderte Lifte die den kompletten Berg vernetzen, riesige Restaurants in denen tausende Wintersportler jeden Tag massenabgefertigt werden, breit gewalzte Pistenautobahnen usw.
Der Charme und das ursprüngliche scheint da irgendwie verloren gegangen zu sein und man könnte meinen, dass es die kleinen aber feinen Skigebiete gar nicht mehr gibt. Aber dies ist nicht so. Es gibt sie noch, diese kleinen Juwelen an denen du früh morgens nicht vor ewig langen Warteschlangen stehst, wo der Powder nicht innerhalb einer Stunde komplett verspurt ist und wo du nicht das Gefühl bekommst die Seele des Berges sei komplett zerstört worden.
An diesem Tag waren wir in einem dieser Juwele unterwegs und die Bedingungen hätten besser nicht sein können. Unverspurter Powder soweit das Auge reicht, tief verschneite Wälder und ein Gelände das sich sehen lassen kann.
Ein perfekter Wintertag und das beste daran, wir waren fast komplett alleine im Backcountry unterwegs.
Uns kam schon das schmunzeln bei dem Gedanken das sich im gleichen Moment auf der anderen Talseite hunderte Freerider um das letzte freie Powderfeld streiten, während wir im Frieden unsere Runden im fast menschenleeren Backcountry drehten.
Ewig lange Treeruns in offenen Lärchenwäldern……zaubern jeden Freerider ein Smile ins Gesicht.
Gewusst wie, geniessen und nicht zu sehr auf die grosse Glocke hängen. Die Möglichkeiten scheinen in den Alpen fast unendlich zu sein, allein im Bundesland Tirol gibt es mehr als 85 Skigebiete. Zu welcher Zeit am richtigen Ort zu sein ist allerdings eine andere Sache.
Diesen Job übernehmen dann die Freerides Guides von Into the White. Seit über 15 Jahren sind wir ständig auf der Suche nach neuen Gebieten und Spots. Da hat sich im Laufe der Jahre einiges an Wissen angesammelt von dem unsere Gäste profitieren. Man muss nur ein bisschen flexibel und offen für Neues sein, dann kann man immer noch stressfreies Freeriden fernab von den Massen geniessen.
Hier scheint die Zeit stehengeblieben zu sein.
So ganz geheim sind die Skigebiete dann aber auch nicht. Hier die beste Plattform mit Auflistung (fast) aller Skigebiete in Europa.
An einem schönen sonnigen Powdertag herrscht reger Betrieb in Österreichs grösstem Skigebiet, dem weltbekannten Arlberg. Nicht zu unrecht, denn die Möglichkeiten sind einzigartig. Von den steilen Hängen der Valluga in St.Anton am Arlberg bis hin zu den weiten baumfreien Hängen der Albona in Stuben am Arlberg ist für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei. Bei dem ganzen Rummel und der Grösse des Gebietes ist es allerdings nicht immer einfach den Überblick zu bewahren, um perfekten unverspurten Powder zu finden, schon gar nicht, wenn der letzte Schneefall schon einige Tage her ist.
Wer dabei auf einen Guide setzt, steigert seine Chancen auf das weisses Glück merklich, denn um an solchen Tagen trotzdem scoren zu können, bedarf es einiges an Wissen und Erfahrung um gute Bedingungen zu erwischen.
Ein Anblick bei dem jedes Freeriderherz höher schlägt. Tief eingeschneites Stuben am Arlberg.
Aufstieg zum Maroikopf
An diesem speziellen Tag waren wir in Stuben am Arlberg unterwegs und der letzte Schneefall war schon ein paar Tage her.
Im Liftbereich waren alle Abfahrten schon hoffnungslos verspurt. Dank der Gebietskenntnis unserer Freeride Guides war sofort ein Plan für den Tag aufgestellt. Hike and Ride war die Devise. Kurze Aufstiege (ohne Splitboards) und lange Abfahrten in verschiedene Seitentäler. Nach unseren ersten Hike erreichten wir nach ca. 30 min den Gipfel des Maroikopfes und waren allesamt überwältigt von dem atemberaubenden 360 Grad Panorama.
Nach einem 30 minütigem Aufstieg erreichten wir den Gipfel des Maroikopfesund genossen die atemberaubende Aussicht auf die umliegenden Berge
Nach kurzer Verschnaufpause ging es gleich an die Abfahrt und es waren sofort wunderschöne offene Hänge gefunden. Perfekter Powder, strahlender Sonnenschein und ideale Snowboardruns. Kein lästiges Traversieren einfach nur 1.300 Höhenmeter „down the line“ Freeriding.

Aufstieg zum Knödelkopf
Unten angekommen ging es gleich mit dem nächsten Lift wieder rauf zur Bergstation und auf zum nächsten Ziel dem Knödelkopf. Nach dem ca. 20 minütigen Aufstieg erreichten wir dessen Gipfel und es erwartete uns wieder eine lange Abfahrt in unverspurten Gelände.

Wir machten noch ein zwei andere Abfahrten an diesem Tag bevor die Wolken reinzogen um den nächsten Schneefall anzukündigen. Was für ein Tag. Wie in einem Traum. Freeriden vom feinsten der noch lange in Erinnerung bleiben wird.

Die Lawinengefahr wird in fünf Stufen eingeteilt, wobei als Grundregel gilt: Je größer die Stufe, desto weniger steile Hänge befahren werden können.

Danach müssen alle ihr LVS Gerät auf »Empfangen« umschalten. Wer nicht sucht, nimmt Schaufel und Sonde in die Hand. Jetzt legt der erfahrenste Helfer den Suchweg möglichst schnell in Schlangenlinien zurück (Grobsuche). Sobald das erste Signal geortet ist, läuft die Feinsuche. Dabei folgt der Sucher der Richtung des stärksten Signals und nähert sich dem Verschütteten auf der Feldlinie. Sobald der Sucher auf zwei bis drei Meter an den Verschütteten herangekommen ist, beginnt er mit der Punktortung. Der Feldlinie folgend geht der Sucher so lange auf dieser Achse weiter, bis die Signalstärke wieder deutlich abnimmt. In der Mitte des Bereiches der stärksten Signale wird dieses Vorgehen auf einer zweiten Achse senkrecht zur ersten wiederholt. Dazu ein Stockkreuz auf die Stelle des stärksten Signals legen und mit der systematischen Sondierung von innen nach außen beginnen. Nach dem ersten sicheren Kontakt mit dem Verschütteten, die Sonde exakt dort stecken lassen, wo die Person sondiert wurde. Der unmittelbare Bereich um diese Sonde herum darf nun nicht mehr betreten werden. Danach wird sofort mit dem Graben begonnen. Am Besten gräbt man mit mehreren Personen, um sich abzuwechseln. Hat man den Kopf des Opfers freigelegt, werden sofort die Vitalfunktionen kontrolliert. Danach der Rest ausgegraben.

Ohne richtig gute Schaufel ist es fast nicht möglich, jemanden aus einer Lawine zu graben. Die Schaufel sollte stabil sein, einen guten Griff haben, zusammen steckbar und unbedingt aus Metall sein. Danach müssen alle ihr LVS Gerät auf »Empfangen« umschalten. Wer nicht sucht, nimmt Schaufel und Sonde in die Hand. Jetzt legt der erfahrenste Helfer den Suchweg möglichst schnell in Schlangenlinien zurück (Grobsuche). Sobald das erste Signal geortet ist, läuft die Feinsuche. Dabei folgt der Sucher der Richtung des stärksten Signals und nähert sich dem Verschütteten auf der Feldlinie. Sobald der Sucher auf zwei bis drei Meter an den Verschütteten herangekommen ist, beginnt er mit der Punktortung. Der Feldlinie folgend geht der Sucher so lange auf dieser Achse weiter, bis die Signalstärke wieder deutlich abnimmt. In der Mitte des Bereiches der stärksten Signale wird dieses Vorgehen auf einer zweiten Achse senkrecht zur ersten wiederholt. Dazu ein Stockkreuz auf die Stelle des stärksten Signals legen und mit der systematischen Sondierung von innen nach außen beginnen. Nach dem ersten sicheren Kontakt mit dem Verschütteten, die Sonde exakt dort stecken lassen, wo die Person sondiert wurde. Der unmittelbare Bereich um diese Sonde herum darf nun nicht mehr betreten werden. Danach wird sofort mit dem Graben begonnen. Am Besten gräbt man mit mehreren Personen, um sich abzuwechseln. Hat man den Kopf des Opfers freigelegt, werden sofort die Vitalfunktionen kontrolliert. Danach der Rest ausgegraben.

«In February 2015 I recieved a call from Benni Zanon, a good snowboard buddy of mine. He invited me to join him on a freeride trip to Iceland. It didn’t take him long time to convince me. As the time went by, some more people joined us and in the end, we had not only set up a good crew, we created a project for a proper film about freeriding in Iceland»
[dropcap]W[/dropcap]e made our mission clear. Exploring the northern part of Iceland and shoot a short movie about snowboarding and freeriding in Iceland. Our area of interest is called the «Troll Peninsula», a mythical place with rugged mountains and incredible lines, going straight down to the sea. Everyone was very curious about this place, as no one of us has ever been there. We couldn’t wait to finally ride some Icelandic lines.
With only two small ski fields in the area, the important item in our boardbags would be a Splitboard, another important thing if you go to Iceland is, warm clothes. It can get really cold and windy up there. Fully prepared we took off and got our trip started in the middle of April to explore this beautiful island high up north close to the arctic circle.
We got our first view on Iceland out of the airplane. It was a picture perfect bluebird day as we flew over the Vatnajökull. The biggest ice cap in Europe. With an unbelievable size of 8,100 km2 and a maximum thickness of 1.000m it looked like a giant ocean of ice from the plane. What a crazy place we thought. Benni and Sebi started their trip a day earlier and already organized a rental car. They picked us up from the airport and we wasted no time to driving up to the north, where we got straight into a big winter storm. Welcome to Iceland. Fortunately we made it to Akureyri, the biggest town of the north and a good starting point to undertake trips to the northern tip of Iceland.
Our first snow contact was a harsh one, with strong winds up to 80km/h we almost got blown down from the mountain. Very typical weather here in Iceland, the locals told us. On the next day the storm left and we drove up to the very northern part of the «Troll Peninsula». The plan was to do some warming-up with hike & rides next to the street.
It’s not long time, since Iceland build this new road connecting the small fishing villages Olasfsjördur and Siglufjördur. The good thing about this new road – it goes straight through the incredible mountains with its insane lines. Finally, we decided to hike into a promising looking bowl, which had enough lines for all of us. After a 2hour splitboard hike, we found ourselfs on the top of a peak with amazing views down to the ocean and great freeride terrain below us. Dropping-in, our first good run in Iceland.

This knowledge combined with the experience of what and how shootings are working is very importent when it comes to guiding professional photo and film crews.

The biggest part of the work defenitely had our producer/filmer/editor/sound designer Elmar Strotmann which I want to give big probs at this point. By Fair Means shows freeriding in our home resort the arlberg and the story behind how to approach these big lines as well as all the ups and downs that come with it.
